There is a version of you that formed before you had language for it. Before you could reflect on it or decide whether it was accurate. It formed from what happened to you, what was said about you, what was rewarded and what was punished.
That version is still here. It is the one that flinches before you consciously register the threat. It is the one that pulls back when things start going well. It is the one that creates the distance in relationships that are getting too close.
Most of your behavior makes more sense when you understand that version. The procrastination. The perfectionism. The self-sabotage. The exhaustion. They are not character flaws. They are strategies developed by a younger version of you who was doing the best they could.
The problem is that version is still operating the controls. And it does not update automatically.
Seeing it clearly is where the possibility of something different begins.
