Overstimulation occurs when the volume or intensity of sensory, cognitive, or emotional input exceeds the nervous system's capacity to process it comfortably. The result is overwhelm, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and a persistent sense of being unable to slow down.

The human nervous system was not designed for the current information environment. It evolved in conditions of relative scarcity, intermittent stimulation, predictable social structures, and extended periods of sensory quiet. The modern environment provides none of these.

Chronic overstimulation keeps the nervous system in a state of activation that is difficult to exit. Even during nominally restful activities, the baseline remains elevated. Sleep suffers. Concentration degrades. The capacity for genuine pleasure or rest diminishes.

Symptoms of overstimulation include difficulty tolerating silence, irritability without clear cause, sensitivity to noise or light, difficulty making decisions, and a persistent restlessness that makes sitting still feel impossible.

Recovery from overstimulation requires intentional reduction of input, not just breaks from screens but genuine sensory and cognitive quiet. The nervous system needs time to complete cycles it has left open.
