It looks like caring deeply. It looks like wanting things to be good. It functions like something else entirely.

Perfectionism is a shield. Not against failure. Against exposure. If I do not put it out there, it cannot be judged. If I do not finish, it cannot be criticized. If I keep improving it indefinitely, I never have to find out what happens when people see it.

High standards are about the work. Perfectionism is about what the work means about you. The difference is what happens when the standard is not met. High standards say: that was not good enough. Perfectionism says: I am not good enough.

This is why perfectionism rarely produces satisfaction. Even when the work is excellent, the perfectionist already sees what could be better. The relief never comes because the standard is not actually about quality. It is about being safe from judgment.

The way out is not lowering your standards. It is uncoupling your worth from the outcome. Easier said than done. But the first step is seeing it clearly.
