Nervous system dysregulation refers to a state in which the autonomic nervous system does not return to baseline after activation, remaining chronically elevated in sympathetic activation (fight/flight) or collapsed into hypoactivation (freeze/shutdown) rather than moving fluidly between states as circumstances change.

The autonomic nervous system has three primary states: social engagement (the ventral vagal state of safety and connection), sympathetic activation (mobilization for action), and dorsal vagal shutdown (immobilization in response to overwhelming threat). Dysregulation involves getting stuck in sympathetic or dorsal states.

Dysregulation develops from chronic stress, trauma, inadequate co-regulation in early development, or sustained exposure to unpredictable or threatening environments. The nervous system learns to stay activated as the default.

Signs of sympathetic dysregulation include chronic anxiety, hypervigilance, difficulty sleeping, inability to relax, and emotional reactivity. Signs of dorsal dysregulation include depression, dissociation, numbness, fatigue, and difficulty engaging.

Regulation is developed through consistent experiences of safety, adequate rest, physical movement, co-regulation with others, and practices that directly engage the vagal system. It is a physiological process, not simply a psychological one.
