The job ended. The relationship is over. The role you built yourself around, parent, partner, professional, caregiver, has changed or disappeared.
And underneath it, something unexpected: you are not sure who you are without it.
Identity that is built entirely on roles is fragile. Not because the roles do not matter, but because they are external. They can be taken. They end. And when they do, they take the structure of self with them.
The question of who you are outside the roles is uncomfortable because it has no easy answer. It requires sitting with uncertainty. It requires finding, or building, a sense of self that does not depend on what you do or who you are to others.
This is not a crisis. It is an opportunity that arrives in the shape of one.
The question is not who you were. It is who you are becoming now that the old answer is gone.
